If you need a refresher course or are still in Rigging 101, please check out The Ships List webpage regarding the various types of masts and sail patterns.  Of course there are variations and exceptions.  For example, the Swan of Israel Dane was built as a Schooner and was so noted until she was employed by the British, who then called her a Sloop.  When that contract ran out, the Americans called her a Schooner again.  Please see Rob Ossian’s website if you want the graduate level course for ship types, including military.  He’ll help you with everything from an Argosy to a Turtle Ship to a Yorkshire Billy Boy.

Notes:

*1 SS C Melrose:  The “SSC” stands for State Ship Canadian.
